The Shuttleworth Collection has launched its latest search for aspiring engineers, announcing that applications for its long-running Engineering Apprenticeship scheme are now open. The programme, now more than half a century old has become one of the most sought-after aviation apprenticeships in the UK, thanks to the extraordinary aircraft that apprentices have the chance to work with. Many examples in the Shuttleworth Collection are the last flying aircraft of their type, offering trainees an experience unmatched anywhere else in the sector.
A spokeperson for the Collection said, “The scheme is always heavily subscribed due to the diverse selection of aircraft within our Collection, but we’d love to ensure this opportunity reaches as far and wide as possible to ensure that candidates from a range of backgrounds can apply. We’re keen to welcome the next generation of engineers into the industry”. The organisation has welcomed generations of young engineers through its workshop since the scheme began more than 50 years ago, with many alumni choosing to remain at Shuttleworth after completing the four-year programme. That continuity, and the depth of hands-on mechanical heritage it preserves, has become a hallmark of the institution’s engineering culture. For would-be apprentices with a fascination for vintage aviation and a desire to help preserve living history, Shuttleworth’s 2025 intake may be the ideal runway to a lifelong engineering career.
