A Junkers A50 Junior is traversing Europe this summer, making a 7,500nm journey that captures the essence of 1930s long-distance flying. The tour begins on 7 June in Dessau, Germany — hometown of the original Junkers Flugzeugwerke. The modern ultralight maintains the iconic corrugated-metal appearance of its 1929 predecessor while integrating advancements such as a 100hp Rotax 912 engine, Garmin G3X avionics, and a Galaxy ballistic rescue system.
The pilot, Claus Cordes, a former Lufthansa captain with over 28,000 flying hours, is flying the open-cockpit aircraft. The tour, covering 18 countries, aims to showcase the A50’s performance and design while celebrating Europe’s varied culture and landscapes from the unique vantage of an open cockpit.
