GA businesses based at the Midlands airport are inviting private pilots to drop in on Saturday 2 October to show support in their campaign to prevent its closure
“We are asking as many pilots as possible to visit Coventry next Saturday,” Aerotech Aircraft Maintenance Director Steve Clark tells Pilot. “The airfield is [effectively] trying to close itself… having been taken over from the Council by a property developer [ostensibly] to be run more efficiently.”
Mr Clark and other business owners and pilots based at Coventry assert that the operator has run down the infrastructure to the point it now claims it is only viable for redevelopment. The published plan for the site is the construction of a ‘gigafactory’ to produce batteries for electric vehicles.
Mr Clark says that losing Coventry Airport to this or any other industrial development is something “our aviation community can ill afford… We need the whole of our aviation sector to sit up and take note, and act now.”
As an additional attraction, Bob Davy will be taking his WWII Yak-3 fighter to Coventry Airport on the day. Note that for any aircraft arrival prior permission is required. For details see https://egbe-flights.com/
