The ’Richard Westgate Flying Foundation – Born to Fly’ announced that from 2026, it will introduce dedicated spin training for BGA instructor candidates, alongside UPRT (Upset Prevention and Recovery Training), and BGA spin training. The scheme will be delivered through a UK-wide touring programme, to bring structured, high-quality training to gliding clubs across the country.
The Richard Westgate Flying Foundation is a non-profit initiative dedicated to improving access to aerobatic gliders and supporting the next generation of British pilots. Founded by renowned aerobatic pilot Guy Westgate in memory of his twin brother Richard, who tragically died in 2012, the Foundation operates two aircraft: a MDM-1 Fox two-seater and a SZD-59 Acro high-performance single-seater. The Fox is used for coaching, training, and display development, while the Acro offers pilots at all levels a pathway from beginners through to advanced and unlimited aerobatic categories.
The Foundation’s mission is to provide open access, build enthusiasm, develop talent, support the British aerobatic team, and inspire people to fly. Guy Westgate told Pilot, “This isn’t a private syndicate. It is a national resource — created from Richard’s legacy to give ambitious pilots real opportunity.” He added, “through that legacy, the new British Glider Aerobatic Squad will have full use of both aircraft as they prepare for the 2026 World Glider Aerobatic Championships in Fayence, France.”
