ABOVE: Three axis microlight time will be credited towards the experience requirements for the CPL

The CAA is to go ahead with a proposal to extend the crediting of three axis microlight time towards the experience requirements for the Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL) gained via the modular course. Flight time in a three-axis microlight can already be counted for a Private Pilot’s Licence, due to changes made to pilot licensing last October.

This latest move is a result of what the CAA calls ‘Wave 2’ and the results of a consultation which have just been made public. More than 70% of people who responded to the consultation were in favour of the change. In a statement, the CAA said, ‘we will progress with extending the crediting of three axis microlight time towards the experience requirements for the CPL gained via the modular course’.

Other decisions taken after the consultation included the requirement for an appropriate standard of flying to be displayed during the applicable refresher training, the introduction of a revalidation by experience for pilots of single engine helicopters up to a MTOW of 3,175kg, a review of the question bank for the Competency Based Instrument Rating exams, and the consolidation of the existing subjects into a smaller number of exams. It was also decided not to proceed at the moment with a Basic Instrument Rating similar to that available under EASA.
