ABOVE: CALAF/3 is currently underway in London, bringing together numerous parties responsible for civil aviation regulation.

The Civil Aviation Authority is playing host to the third Civil Aviation Legal Advisers Forum on behalf of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), with ‘chief executives, director generals, legal experts and officials responsible for civil aviation regulation’ currently concluding three days of talks at London’s Royal Aeronautical Society.

“As we gather for the Civil Aviation Legal Advisers Forum, I am reminded of the pivotal role that legal advisors play in the aviation sector,” commented CAA chief executive Rob Bishton. “Their expertise means that our regulations are robust, and our industry is compliant with international standards”.

Key topics on the agenda will include discussions around artificial intelligence, sustainability and enforcement. Separate panel discussions will also consider the implementation of air navigation regulations, co-operative mechanisms for aviation safety and the use of safety information in judicial proceedings.

The third iteration of the forum – described by ICAO secretary general Juan Carlos Salazar as “a leading international event for informing the legal regulatory frameworks that will guide aviation’s transformation worldwide” – coincides with the 80th anniversary of ICAO’s signing of the Chicago Convention. This timing “reminds us how international aviation law has consistently evolved to meet new challenges while remaining anchored by its founding principles,” he added.

Bishton concluded: “Looking to the future, the continued partnership between regulators, industry and ICAO will be crucial in navigating the challenges and opportunities ahead”.
