France’s Armament General Directorate (DGA) has awarded Airbus Helicopters and Naval Group a contract to deliver six VSR700 uncrewed aerial systems for the French Navy, strengthening maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities from 2028. Under the agreement, Airbus Helicopters will supply the aircraft platform, while Naval Group will manage shipboard integration and connectivity with combat systems.
The VSR700 has been selected as part of France’s broader modernisation of naval aviation assets. Designed for ship-based operations, the VSR700 will be equipped with a surveillance radar, electro-optical sensors and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver, enabling maritime operations and target identification without risking crewed aircraft.
Naval Group said the programme highlights the growing role of fully integrated uncrewed systems in future naval operations, supported by its Steeris Mission System.
