The pilot and passenger flying in a homebuilt Kolb Mk III were killed when the aircraft crashed into a lake in Pennsylvania. The plane’s keys and the helmets worn by the two had been stolen from a locked garage.
Just before it crashed, the Kolb was seen to fly under a bridge, skim the water at six feet and pull up in a vertical climb to 300 feet. It hit the water when the pilot then attempted to follow through with a loop.
The pilot had neither licence nor medical, but had been seen flying in ultralights with other pilots by the manager of the airport at which the Kolb was based.
An unregistered Bell 47 crashed near Benton City in Washington, killing the pilot. Said to be on a ‘maintenance test flight’, the helicopter had taken off from the owner’s residence. No identification could be established for the helicopter and the pilot/owner had no formal flight credentials.
