The Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) has received confirmation that Vulcan XH558 is to remain at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, ending a period of uncertainty that accompanied the expiration of the airport’s previous lease in June 2023.

However, with the City of Doncaster Council preparing to announce its selection of a new operator for the airport – which could open as soon as early 2026 – the Vulcan’s long-term home has been secured. “While there are still details to work out, we have the support of the City of Doncaster Council to stay at the airport… and that means a great deal to us all,” said VTST Chief Executive Marc Walters. He added that “this is fantastic news for the charity and its supporters as we feel that XH558 is in the right location, owing to her history and links with the airport, former RAF Finningley”.

South Yorkshire Airport City (a programme dedicated to reopening the airport) Director Christian Foster said he was looking forward to “put a lease in place that gives [VTST] some long-term security”.

Prior to announcing the closure of the airport in 2022, its owners the Peel Group had indicated that the VTST’s agreement (including parking provision) would not be renewed when it expired in June 2023 and “would therefore have to leave the site at that time”. However, although two potential sites were identified, these would have necessitated dismantling the aircraft and moving it by road to a new location.

In March 2024, VTST welcomed the City of Doncaster’s announcement that it had signed a 125-year lease for the airport, concluding: “We are more than delighted that Vulcan XH558 remains in full working order and we’re looking forward to positive discussions with CDC over what the long term future for XH558 looks like”.
