US manufacturer Carbon Cub recently unveiled its latest creation, the ULT. According to the company, this represents the next evolution of lightweight backcountry aviation by combining the performance of the Carbon Cub with the refinement and simplicity of a modern turbine engine. Developed for the emerging MOSAIC (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) class of aircraft, the ULT introduces ‘a new level of capability for recreational pilots while preserving the short-field performance, responsive handling, and adventure-focused spirit that have defined the Carbon Cub family’.

At the heart of the Carbon Cub ULT is the innovative TurboTech TP-R90 regenerative turboprop engine, designed and manufactured in France. Featuring a dual FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system, this unit delivers push-button starting, single-lever power management and turbine smoothness. Through its automatic management of fuel flow, ignition, temperatures and propeller operation, the TP-R90 allows Carbon Cub ULT pilots ‘to focus on flying rather than engine management’. The regenerative turbine design also achieves fuel efficiency comparable to modern avgas-powered aircraft while offering the durability, reliability and simplicity of a turbine.

Some industry observers predict that small turbines will soon challenge piston engines in the light aircraft market, as the longer TBO and reduced maintenance interval of turbines offsets their higher initial cost.
