The Light Aircraft Company Ltd (TLAC), based at Little Snoring airfield in North Norfolk, has been appointed eastern region Sales and Service Distributor for the revolutionary new aero engine made in Belgium, the D Motor.

The company has been working on the installation of the revolutionary D Motor aero engine in its airframes for the past two years, with Sherwood Rangers in France and Thailand making use of the power unit very successfully. The D Motor is a water cooled, flat four, fuel injected engine capable of producing 95hp whilst utilising side valve technology. It incorporates weight saving construction techniques that enable it to have an installed weight, excluding water cooling system, of a mere 57kg.

The high power output of the D Motor, coupled with a flat torque curve and the low installation weight, first caught the eye of Paul Hendry-Smith, Managing Director of TLAC, over 10 years ago when it was exhibited at The Flying Show at the NEC under the Masschi name.

“The subsequent level of capital investment made by the D Motor company in CNC manufacturing technology and the programme of engine testing, flying and re-testing has taken a long time,” says Paul. “But the company has made steady positive progress and has now launched production engines, which TLAC are now offering as standard in the Sherwood Ranger and Sherwood Scout, in both factory build and as options in the kit build aircraft.”

As a result of TLAC’s working alliance with the D Motor factory, and in conjunction with the D Motor Master Distributor for the UK and Ireland, Gordon Salter of The Wessex Light Aeroplane Company, TLAC has been appointed sole eastern region Sales and Service Distributor for the D Motor range of engines, soon to be increased with a new 6 cylinder power unit.
