Piloted by Tomas Mazetti, the aircraft took off early in the morning on 4 July, 2012 and crossed the border into Belarus undetected. When it reached the capital, Minsk, hundreds of small teddy bear in parachutists were dropped by passenger Hannah Lina Frey. The teddy bear troopers bore placards demanding freedom of speech. ‘Belarus is the last dictatorship in Europe’, says the aeroplanes vendor ‘and the president, Alexander Lukashenko, has clung on to power for twenty years. The teddy bears dropped sparked a political and [diplomatic] crisis.’
Lukashenko was said to be ‘furious’ that a light aircraft had penetrated Belarus airspace, and the teddy drop is claimed to have resulted in him firing two of his generals-the head of the border service and the head of the air force-as well as his foreign minister.
The Jodel made it safely back to Sweden and survives ‘in working condition’. Any profit from the sale will go ‘to the struggle for democracy in Belarus’.
