Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is hosting the WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust (WAHT) Fly In weekend on Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th August.
This will be a special return to life a hundred years ago in a unique aviation setting. Subject to weather and serviceability, the weekend will include demonstration flying by WAHT’s BE2e, Albatros D.Va and Sopwith Snipe. The Sopwith Snipe type were based at Stow Maries Aerodrome during WW1; the Albatros D.Va was a German fighter. These aircraft are unique reproductions and were built in NZ by The Vintage Aviator Ltd, the company owned by Lord of the Rings film director, Peter Jackson.
There will also be visiting aircraft, stalls, a simulator, the TR Register and Jowitt Club, a BBQ on Saturday evening and the Layer Marney Cup (a fuel economy challenge run first in 1914) with entries from all the decades of motoring on Sunday. There will also be separate ticketed talks on how England was defended against the Zeppelin, Gotha and Giant bomber which killed over 1000 people (Saturday at 1200). This remarkable campaign created the blue print for that great victory, the Battle of Britain, 23 years later. The second talk will be a Magic Lantern show capturing the essence of Edwardian England as people would have seen it recorded at the time, and depicting the ravages of war (Sunday at 1100).
