The CAA is running a free drone safety event at Compton Abbas airfield on 11 November, aiming to give drone users and GA enthusiasts the chance to learn from one another and promote safe flying for all

Directed at south coast and south-west drone users, attendees will find out about flying opportunities in their local area, and receive tips on how they can use their drones responsibly, ‘enabling them to expand their love of flying’. Pre-registration is required at http://dronesafe.uk/compton/

The event starts at 10.30 with presentations from the CAA, Compton Abbas airfield and The Phantom Flight School. Experts from these and other organisations such as drone manufacturer Yuneec, drone distributor UAVision, VR specialist V-Mach Media, and air traffic control body NATS will then be on hand all day to help with questions or advice. Free refreshments will be available.

The event forms part of the CAA’s ‘DroneSafe’ education campaign, promoting collaboration between drone users and the GA community, enabling both parties are able to share airspace responsibly. Jonathan Nicholson, the CAA’s Assistant Director of Communications commented: “We’ve seen a huge spike in drone ownership across the country. By enlisting the help of the GA community, drone enthusiasts have a fantastic chance to be welcomed to the fold of flying, whilst simultaneously learning more about the environment they operate in. It might even inspire them to follow in the footsteps of the pilots they will be speaking to.”

The CAA’s Dronecode is available to download at www.dronesafe.uk and encompasses a simple set of rules around safe and responsible use:

– Don’t fly near airports or airfields

– Remember to stay below 400ft (120m) and at least 150ft (50m) away from buildings and people

– Observe your drone at all times

– Never fly near aircraft

– Enjoy your drone responsibly
