It is the first time night flying will be carried out at the Wiltshire airfield in 30 years

Helicopter students at Old Sarum Airfield hoping to become Search and Rescue pilots are set to begin training for their night flying qualification.

Their three-year training began in February, and they have already achieved their PPLs and completed a CPL theory course.

The eight students are part of an internship programme with Vantage Aviation, whose ex-military instructors provide training for EASA and FAA private and commercial licences and specialist helicopter flying.

Airfield Manager Angus Beal said: ‘We are delighted to be able to facilitate night flying at Old Sarum. We are keen to ensure the future of the airfield and this is a major step forward.’

Night flying at Old Sarum is currently open for helicopters only, but it is hoped to be available for other light aircraft in early 2017.
