After a five-year manufacturing hiatus, Kerrville, Texas-based Mooney Aircraft Corporation will resume production in January. New funding from Soaring America Corporation in California, owned by Taiwanese businessman Jerry Chen, is providing relaunch capital for the company, which will restart production of the Acclaim Type S and Ovation 2.
Mooney said details of the financial arrangements for the relaunch of the 84-year-old company, which suspended production in 2010, would remain confidential.
“It’s a new day for Mooney. And with a new investment group that is committed to the future, we’re expecting to make a strong move in the industry,” said Chief Financial Officer Barry Hodkin. “It’s been a long time coming and we couldn’t be more excited about our return to manufacturing one of the finest and most trusted airplane fleets in the industry.”
The first order of business will be to hire and train a new workforce and re-establish the supply chain. Mooney said it would recruit up to 100 people within the first year of operation, including technicians, engineers, line workers, accounting and sales people. Within two years it anticipates employing significantly more depending on the demand for its products.
