The Helicopter Club of Great Britain confirmed the news two days before the event.
In a message sent out by the Helicopter Club of Great Britain just two days before the event, Chairman David Phipps said “I regret to inform you that the 3rd Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup helicopter races scheduled to take place as part of Aero and Heli Expo at Sywell on the 1st and 2nd of July have, as of this afternoon, been cancelled by the airfield management”.
Pilot understands that it was only after months of negotiation with the CAA that the course layout and separation from spectators was agreed. When just before the event was due to be held Sywell Airfield management re-oriented the Challenge Cup course to ease problems with parking visiting aircraft for Heli UK Expo and the concurrent AeroExpo event, the change was such that a fresh approval would have been required. As this was impossible in the very short time available, there was no choice but to cancel the event.
