The GoFly competition, which has Boeing as the main sponsor, is offering a top prize of $1m to design, build and fly a ‘safe, quiet, ultra-compact near-VTOL personal flying device capable of flying twenty miles while carrying a single person’

Consequently, there are several eVTOL machines being developed that are aimed at the recreational aviator and meet the FAA’s Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) criteria.

Some of the innovative designs already entered include the A2 Avenger, which is built by Assen Aeronautics, Electric Jet Aircraft’s VertiJet, the Opener BlackFly and Zeva Aero’s Zero.

GoFly also recently announced that teTra, a team from Tokyo, Japan, had won the $100,000 Pratt & Whitney Disruptor Award. Displaying innovative technical design and creative prowess, team teTra beat a field of 854 teams, comprising 3,800 innovators from 103 countries.
