Today, 1 May 2015, is the official opening of Glenforsa Airfield under its new managers, Brendan and Allison Walsh. The 730m grass strip alongside the beach at Glenforsa on the Scottish Isle of Mull is a vital operational resource not only for Mull but also for the surrounding islands, and a popular destination for aviators and enthusiasts.

Brendan and Allison are experienced private pilots, having for many years prior to their move to Mull run The Intrepid Aviation Company which looks after the vintage aircraft collection of supergroup Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour. However, they come with added skills as they are also expert hoteliers and in 2003 completely revamped The Glenforsa Hotel next to the airfield.

Now that the Walshes have secured the running of the airfield, they offer its hospitality in conjunction with the 14-roomed hotel, which has a well-stocked bar, restaurant serving local produce and beautiful views over the airfield and the Sound of Mull. Together, these facilities offer visiting pilots a unique experience on the island.

The next aim of the Glenforsa team is to bring their extensive experience of running the North Weald and Orsett air shows to bear in putting the annual Glenforsa Fly-in back on the map as an unmissable event for private pilots. In previous years the Glenforsa Fly-in has been a legendary high point in the private aviation calendar, attracting up to 135 aircraft from the UK and beyond, but latterly it has apparently not been so outstanding.

Brandan and Allison aim to reverse that trend with the 44th Annual Glenforsa Fly-in Weekend on 23-25 May.
