Garmin has unveiled a new series of VHF COM and NAV/COM radios, the GTR and GNC series. The new standalone units replace the SL 30 and SL 40 models and include features to reduce pilot workload, while also offering 8.33 kHz channel spacing.
Among their features are a unique frequency database that makes it easy to find frequencies associated with an airport or facility by entering the location name or station ID. When manually tuning, a reverse look-up function will automatically provide the navaid or airport identifier. Pilots can also find the nearest airport, control centre, flight service station, weather frequencies and VORs.
All models also include a COM monitor function allowing a pilot to listen to ATIS transmissions without leaving the active ATC frequency, for example. They will also automatically store the twenty most recently used frequencies and up to fifteen most-used frequencies.
