The CAA has appointed former RAF Group Captain Tony Rapson as head of the organisation’s new General Aviation Unit.

The GA Unit was established by the CAA as a result of the Government’s GA Red Tape Challenge consultation. It is due to become operational from April 2014.

Mr Rapson is currently on secondment to the Department for Transport (DfT) as the UK’s policy lead for the implementation of the Single European Sky legislation, but will return to the CAA this month.

He joined the CAA as an airspace policy expert in 2008 following a 27-year career in the RAF, where he completed tours in the Ministry of Defence, Air Command Headquarters and as Officer Commanding the London Air Traffic Control Centre (Military).

The CAA has also announced the appointment of Rob Bishton – who is currently Group Operations Director at Fastet Plc – as head of its Flight Operations department.
