The FAA is hoping to find a replacement for leaded avgas within the next five years.
According to an article in Flying magazine, the American organisation has asked fuel producers to submit samples of unleaded fuel.
Fuel produces need to submit data packages for unleaded fuel formulations by 1 July 2014. Ten suppliers will then be selected for laboratory testing, and one or two chosen for engine and aircraft testing.
The used of avgas has come under fire from the US Environmental Protection Agency due the presence of tetraethyl lead (TEL). It is hoped that the move will speed up the development of unleaded fuels that could simplify its replacement.
