It’s all go for the 2018 Ushaia, Argentina to Lakeland, Florida, USA vintage air rally and, unlike the successful 2016 Crete2Cape rally, it’s all free to take part — but you’ll have to hurry to apply
The rally will start from the world’s southernmost airport on 1 March 2018, arriving in Florida on 14 April. Fifteen vintage aeroplanes nominally built in the 1920s (with support aircraft) will again take to the air to meet and overcome whatever challenges await them en route.
Thanks to generous sponsorship, all costs for the participating two-person crews will be covered – from crating and delivering the aircraft to the start point, to fuel, food, accommodation, insurance, permits etc on the journey, and restoring the aircraft to their home bases at the end.
A Pilot magazine team of Don Peterson and Keith Wilson is planning to enter Don’s beautiful ‘post-vintage thoroughbred’ PA-18 Super Cub amphibian. Any other crews wishing to take part in the event, which covers 19 countries in 42 days, largely following the Aeropostale routes of bygone times, should apply via www.vintageairrally.com/rallies/upcoming/ushuaia2usa
