Bury in Bloom and Bury St Edmunds Town Council are planning to install a sculpture at a roundabout close to the site of a dispersal at the former USAAF base at Rougham, Bury St.Edmunds.
The design – which will adorn the Mount Road/Lady Miriam Way Roundabout – is based on the tail structure of a B-17 Flying Fortress and was created by local blacksmith Nigel Kaines of Designs on Metal. The sculpture, which will be made of galvanised steel, will feature a ‘Dove of Peace’ linking the two sections of tail.
Bury St.Edmunds Town Council has contributed £10,000 to the funding of the sculpture and the project is in partnership with the Bury in Bloom campaign. Fundraising is still in progress.
The sculpture is planned to be in place by May 8 2015, the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) day. An inauguration event is being planned for the day and will include a VE Day Fly In at the adjacent Rougham Airfield, which will offer free landing fees courtesy of the landowners, Rougham Estate.
