Coventry University is researching Loss of Control In Flight (LOC-I) and is looking for a further batch of ATPL volunteers with FBW experience for Phase II of its programme

For 55 years LOC-I has been the primary fatal accident category for all aviation sectors and all types of aircraft, around the world.

Although accident rates for commercial jets have decreased over this period LOC-I continues to dominate the statistics. When the call for volunteers to participate in Phase I went out on Pilotweb in June “the response was fantastic,” says Senior Lecturer in Aerospace/Flight Safety Researcher Mike Bromfield. “We doubled the number of volunteers overnight.”

Coventry University is hoping ATPLs with modern Fly-by-Wire aircraft experience will spare two hours this November/December to support their prevention and recovery of LOC-I trials in their generic ‘state of the art’ engineering flight simulator.

All participants will receive a full preflight briefing before ‘flying’ a selection of scenarios in the fixed-base engineering flight simulator environment.

Trials will take place at Coventry’s Human in The Loop Laboratory (CHILL) located within the Engineering & Computing Building, Gulson Road, Coventry CV1 2JH, approx fifteen minutes walk from Coventry railway station and ten miles south-east of Birmingham Airport. Free car parking is available adjacent to the facility.
