A team from Switzerland is working on a project to create an ‘Eco-Balloon’ that uses a quarter of the fuel of a standard hot air balloon.
Whereas a normal balloon uses an envelope with a single layer of fabric, Balloon Concept’s creation uses two envelopes – one inside the other, with an insulation layer of air between the two. The outside is coated in a nanoscale layer of aluminium to insulate it further.
The team, lead by Pierrick Duvoisin – who holds four FAI World Records – aims to fly across Canada in 2014.
