Applications are being invited for the new 2015 flying scholarship offered by the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers in memory of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland. The Coachmakers’ Company is a City of London Livery Company, raising and distributing charitable funds within the aerospace, automotive and coach making industries.

The scholarship is available to young people from the ages of 18 to 30, who are resident in the UK and who have not previously been awarded any such bursary. No previous flying experience is required, although evidence of a keen interest in aviation is a necessity. The aim is to offer a possibly life-changing opportunity to the successful applicant.

The scholarship value is approximately £4,500 and is to be match-funded by the successful scholarship winner. The training will take place on the yellow and silver DH82A Tiger Moth biplanes belonging to the Cambridge Flying Group (CFG), which is based at Cambridge Airport. It has been said many times that, “if you can fly a Tiger Moth – you can fly anything!” The CFG has over 60 years’ experience of providing training on this type of aircraft.

Group Captain Marcus Wills CVO OBE, Chairman of the Coachmakers Aerospace Awards Committee, says: “The Coachmakers Company is delighted to continue to play a part in helping a young person to achieve an ambition when they might otherwise be unable to do so. I am sure that, in the long term, this scholarship and learning to fly in a vintage aircraft will make a significant contribution to more widespread general knowledge of airmanship and flight safety.”

The closing date for applications is Friday 3 July 2015.
