11 According to statistics in AOPA’s latest Nall GA accident report, piston engine failure accidents work out at about 0.4 per 100,000 flight hours. And, for airline pilots flying gas-turbine powered aircraft, there is less than one incident of engine failure (in the air or on the ground) for every million flights worldwide so statistics indicate that most ATPLs will finish their careers and retire without experiencing even one engine failure. But remember, as Mark Twain said, there are lies, damn lies and statistics.
