The skies above Alderney will be buzzing during the weekend of 24-26 June when this third largest of the Channel Islands will be hosting its 24th annual Fly-In weekend.
Other attractions of particular appeal to private pilots include VAT- and Duty-free shopping and VAT- and Tax-free AvGas.
There will be no registration fee for the Fly-In and landing fees will include 72 hours free parking. Furthermore, free transfer from the airport to their accommodation will be provided by the Alderney Chamber of Commerce.
Alderney’s Flying Club Chairman David Chiswell said: “Our social events programme will kick off with a welcome drinks reception on Friday 24th and dinner with live music at ‘Bumps’. Our Prize-Giving Gala Dinner on Saturday night will be with live music by “The Mad Scatters”, a very popular local band. “
On the Nature and History Trail:
A special programme of excursions includes boat trips around the island to discover Alderney’s spectacular sea birds, a guided tour exploring The Nunnery – one of Western Europe’s best preserved small Roman forts – and an entertaining train ride on the Channel Island’s only working railway with Alderney’s Uke Band, followed by a guided tour of Mannez Lighthouse.
Special 9-hole “Fly-In” Golf Competition Saturday 25 June
Alderney’s golf course is one of the most scenic and also most challenging courses in the Channel Islands and for this year’s Fly-In weekend, the Alderney Golf Club is hosting a special 9-hole “Fly-In Competition” especially for keen golfing pilots and crew to play with or against local players on Saturday afternoon 25 June (teeing-off 2:00pm). A limited number of golf clubs are available for hire and early booking is recommended.
Fit for Purpose:
Several more sporting events, including clay pigeon shooting, kayaking, tennis, horse riding and a brisk fitness walk or run will also be available, but are not compulsory.
“Full details and regular updates of the 2016 Fly-In programme of events will be published on our website and on our Alderney Flying Club Facebook page”, said David Chiswell. However, as he points out: “Alderney offers an excellent choice of hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation, but accommodation gets taken up quickly by wedding parties and other visiting groups. Therefore we strongly recommend early bookings.“
“All details and hyperlinks are on our website. Just go to www.flyalderney.com/flyin which also provides the required detailed flight briefing information to help you get to Alderney”.
