The pilot of a Piper PA 46 Malibu said the aircraft ‘landed approximately two feet short of the runway’ at Palo Alto, California. The impact with the lip of the paving tore off the left gear leg and slewed the machine into a taxiway sign as it continued down the runway.
The pilot told investigators he had been using 85 knots as his target speed, but had noticed at 100 feet that his airspeed had reached 97 knots and the aircraft was sinking rapidly. He pitched up, but too late to avoid an accident. Pilot and passengers escaped injury.
