On his second attempt to start the Extra 300, the pilot was informed by Sywell ATC that there was an engine fire.

He ensured the fuel mixture was at the cut-off position and engaged the starter motor for another three to five seconds to try to extinguish the fire, then left the aircraft. The airfield fire service put out the fire. The Extra’s engine cowling and wiring loom were damaged. Investigation suggested that the incident was caused by the pilot over-fuelling the engine during a hot start, and he has been re-briefed as part of a refresher training package.
