The Airspace and Safety Initiative has reported that there were 13 infringements of restricted airspace over the course of the Olympics.
These resulted in three pilots having their licenses provisionally suspended, and one flying instructor having his instructor’s rating provisionally suspended.
All of the infringements were minor and none occurred within the vicinity of any Olympic venues.
Atlas Control – the military air traffic control unit providing the service within the Restricted Zone – handled more than 10,000 aircraft and nearly 20,000 flight plans over the 33 days the restrictions were in place.
Following the removal of the main Olympic changes a smaller set of restrictions will remain to protect the main Paralympics sites until 12 September and various shorter-term airspace restrictions will cover other venues. Click here and download the Olympics Airspace Guide for more information.
