A fifteen year-old has become the UK’s youngest ever solo glider pilot, after taking to the air at Essex Gliding Club on 10 October.
Alex Harris made his historic flight only three days after the British Gliding Association’s Executive Committee approved a rule that lowers the glider solo age from 16 to 14.
He said: “Gliding is my life and, although I had had sixty hours with an instructor, my first solo was the most nerve racking thing I have ever done!”
Alex, who has been flying since the age of twelve, made his first solo flight in a club ASK-13. He is a member of Essex Gliding Club’s cadet scheme and hopes to become a professional pilot.
