Headcorn Aerodrome is hosting an ‘It’s not the Olympics: it’s the Bavarian Beer Fest’-themed fly-in on 28 July.
The Kentish airfield hopes the event will encourage pilots to visit for ‘flight plan-free’ flying around the time of the Olympics.
It is located on the edge of the Olympic Zone and has permission for GA pilots to fly ‘flight-plan-free’ leaving the ATZ to the South East (subject to certain procedures) during the Games period. Click here for more details.
The theme for the event was inspired by the two privately-owned Bucker Jungmann aircraft, based at Headcorn Aerodrome, which have Olympic rings on their nose cowlings.
Jamie Freeman, owner of Headcorn Aerodrome, said: “It is a little known fact that in 1936 Aerobatics was an Olympic sport in the Berlin Olympics. This inspired us to create a German beer fest hangar party to celebrate Olympic Zone-free flying over the beautiful Kent countryside from Headcorn Aerodrome this summer.”
The Beer Fest will take place in Headcorn’s 23,400 square foot hangar, and will include Bavarian and Kentish beers, Bratwurst sausages and entertainment from a German Um Pah band – which has a vast repertoire of German and English sing-along tunes.
Fly-ins are taking place all day, and the evening event will take place from 1930 to 2330, with a free Bratwurst for anyone who turns up in Bavarian fancy dress.
Visitors are encouraged to camp ‘under the wing’ or stay in one of the local villages’ friendly B&Bs.
