According to the CAA a ‘substantial amount’ of Class G airspace could be freed up by plans to alter the way in which the Dartmoor military Danger Area is managed.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is planning to sub-divide the airspace into three new smaller Danger Areas, which will be set within the present lateral dimensions.
Each of the smaller areas will be closed when needed by the military, possibly leaving the other two open to airspace users. Pilots will be notified of closures through Notam.
Under the current system, the whole Danger Area is closed regardless of how much it is being used.
The changes are due to come into effect on 26 July 2012. A chart from the CAA depicting the new arrangement can be downloaded here.
Details of notified upper altitudes, times of activation and full coordinates for the Danger Area will be published in the UK AIP.
