The CAA has opted to defer the implementation of Eurocontrol and EASA’s Standardised European Rules of the Air (SERA) until December 2014.
It was developed on behalf of the European Commission, which the intention of introducing a single set of rules for pilots to follow when flying in European airspace.
As a result a number of changes to current UK rules and regulations will take place. These include:• Transition to the SERA rules covering VFR night flying• Some modifications to flight planning requirements. For example, the UK expects to keep the existing process of ‘booking out’ at an airfield before a flight but will consider whether to introduce some form of ‘booking in’ at the end of a flight• A change from the use of quadrantal cruising levels to semicircular cruising levels to align the UK with the rest of the world.
The CAA is currently developing plans for the implementation of SERA and will provide further information about how the changes will affect British pilots.
