Atlas Control has announced that extra capacity will be made for flight planning approval following the first weekend of Olympic Restrictions.
The air traffic control unit – which runs the restricted airspace – has also issued guidance for pilots that it hopes will improve the flight planning process for entry into restricted airspace.
Currently, a large number of flight plans are being filed with errors – resulting in staff having to spend a considerable amount of time checking them through and liaising with pilots. Because of this, there have been fewer people available to check and approve flight plans filed correctly.
In order to address this problem the MoD will be making ten flight planning staff available during the weekend of 21/22 July. Extra computers and additional telephone capacity will also be provided.
Additionally, Atlas Controls’ operating procedures have been reviewed and changes are currently being made, which will take effect as soon as is practical.
